After an inspiring trip to the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art I contacted the artist of a unique series of art pieces titled “Meaning” by Joshua Luther. I was excited that I was fortunate enough to get a hold of him to conduct a quick interview regarding the piece in his series called “Big Bang Genesis.”
How do you get inspiration for your artwork?
I am interested in the idea of meaning and symbols that represent it. Representing abstraction with symbols. I like to be humorous and kind of subvert. We hold language in such high esteem and I like playing with it.
What inspired the beginning of the piece “Big Bang Genesis?”
It’s the first chapter of genesis cut out of vinyl letters. I wanted to marry the two stories of creation in the bible and the big bang. It shows the dichotomy between the two ideologies.
How many words were used in this piece?
I just used all the words from the entire first chapter of the genesis creation story. I just wanted to grab the words and start drawing.
Are there any other pieces in the series that you are particularly proud of?
“No Particular Order” is a hierarchy of order, a natural order to the universe and a made-up, contrived order that is man made. The order of language is held to such high esteem and it has an innate order but it’s just an illusion of order.
Readers, if you haven’t already, then I strongly suggest you visit this series of intellectually stimulating art pieces. They really got me thinking and that then lead to a world of inspiration!
